Degrees and Certifications:
B.A. Mathematics from Austin College (2002) Mathematics Certification (8-12) ESL Certification
Mr. Devon Mize
This is my 6th year in PISD and my 18th year in public education. 8 of those years were in the high school setting and the remainder have been in middle schools. This year I will be teaching Gateway to Engineering to 8th graders and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) to 6th grade students.
I was born and raised in North Texas, graduating from Howe High School (Howe, TX) and then Austin College (Sherman, TX). I have been married to my wife, Nikki, for just over 14 years. We have a son, Grayson, who will enter 2nd grade this year and an almost 4 year old daughter, Chloe, who loves to (attempt to) do everything on her own. Grayson loves to read and draw and occasionally ride his bike off road. Chloe loves to be read to, loves to create her own stories with dolls and animals and is in the early stages of reading which she also loves to do.
I have a few passions and a few hobbies. My passions in education lie within content and curriculum. I truly feel that every child can learn any material that is taught at a high, rigorous level. I am a former math teacher and have not bought into the myth that "some people are just good at math". I hope to push students beyond their comfort level and teach critical thinking strategies so that students will be content with discomfort and confident to overcome the challenges. My desire for engineering students is to be comfortable with taking risks and to know that failures are part of the engineering design process. When this concept is understood, ceilings break and students soar.
