Mr. Devon Mize
This is my 7th year in PISD and my 19th year in public education. 8 of those years were in the high school setting and the remainder have been in middle schools. This year I will be teaching 8th grade Geometry and Gateway to Engineering. In addition, I will be teaching 6th grade Engineering Design.
I was born and raised in North Texas, graduating from Howe High School (Howe, TX) and then Austin College (Sherman, TX). I have been married to my wife, Nikki, for just over 15 years. We have a son, Grayson, who will enter 3rd grade this year and an almost 5 year old daughter, Chloe, who loves to (attempt to) do everything on her own and lightens up each day. Grayson loves to read, draw and is a budding herpetologist, rescuing and relocating snakes within our neighborhood so they are not killed. Chloe also loves to read and be read to, enjoys creating her own stories with dolls and animals and loves learning.
I have a few passions and a few hobbies. My passions in education lie within content and curriculum. I truly feel that every child can learn any material that is taught at a high, rigorous level. I am a former math teacher (14 years) and have not bought into the myth that "some people are just good at math". I am excited to teach a math class once again since I've been away for several years. My goal is to push students beyond their comfort level and teach critical thinking strategies so that students will be content with discomfort and confident to overcome the challenges. My desire for engineering students is to be comfortable with taking risks and to know that failures are part of the engineering design process. When this concept is understood, ceilings break and students set their own path.
