If you're new to Prosper ISD, you’ve probably wondered what those gigantic flower creations are doing hanging from high schoolers’ necks or decorating the atrium at Walnut Grove High School. Mums, a signature homecoming tradition in Texas, have become a powerful symbol of pride for one’s school.
What started in 1911 as the simple act of giving a chrysanthemum to a date for the homecoming game has grown into an elaborate tradition—giant artificial flowers dressed up with ribbons, bells, charms, and trinkets that reflect each student’s personality and activities. The garter, the male version of the mum, has similar details but is worn on the arm instead of around the neck.
At Prosper ISD, mums have become a part of the culture that connects our students, families, and community. With Richland High School hosting its Forthcoming this year before moving to a traditional homecoming next year, and with three more homecomings still to come across the district this month, mums continue to shine as a tradition that celebrates our shared pride and school spirit.
