HIGHLIGHTS: Rock Hill Debate Named State Champion Runner-Up

This year Rock Hill High School sent two teams to the UIL Cross-Examination Debate State Meet. The teams qualified at the district meet in February before going on to the state meet in March.

At the state meet, students compete in four rounds the first day against debaters from all around the state. Those who place in the top 16, move on to compete on the second day.

Rock Hill Juniors, Kaden Carr and Danush Gade finished the first day with a perfect record of 4 wins. Additionally, their speaker points placed them in the top 5 in the tournament advancing them to the second day.

On the second day, Kaden and Danush first competed in the octo-finals round where they debated in front of three judges. At the end of the round, all three judges gave them the win.

The next round was quarter-finals where they again debated in front of three judges. At the end of the round, again all three judges gave them the win.

The semi-final round was again in front of three judges where they, again, won over all three judges. The final round was very intense. At the end of the round, Kaden and Danush were defeated on a decision of 2-1, one ballot away from a state championship.

Kaden and Danush were awarded the 6A UIL State Champion Runner-Up award along with their coaches Shelby Zarro and Jack Loeb and debate consultant, Josh Smith.
