District Guidance and Counseling

  • Purpose: PISD School Counselors believe all students are unique and have special abilities, talents, and interests that must be recognized and nurtured. Our purpose is to promote and serve students’ academic success, personal and social development, and college and career readiness while working closely with students, staff, parents, and the community.

    Mission: The Mission of Prosper ISD School Counselors is to nurture, grow, and empower all students.

    Vision: Prosper ISD School Counselors are committed to a comprehensive school counseling program that equips students to self-direct personal growth and develop strategic partnerships within their school, family, and community.


    Prosper ISD’s Guidance and Counseling Program is based on the Comprehensive, Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program for Texas Public Schools for grades Pre-K-12 and the American School Counselor Association Model. The comprehensive, developmental guidance and counseling program in Texas public schools is an integral part of the total educational program. It provides a systematic, planned approach for helping all student acquire necessary life skills.  The foundation of the program is to provide developmentally appropriate assistance for all students, and at the same time provide additional assistance to students in need of support. The comprehensive program is based on four components:

    • Guidance Curriculum
    • Responsive Services
    • Individual Planning
    • System Support


    Guidance Curriculum provides guidance content in a systematic way to all of our students.  The areas addressed are:

    • Intrapersonal Effectiveness
    • Interpersonal Effectiveness
    • Post-secondary Planning and Career Readiness
    • Personal Health and Safety


    Responsive Services address the immediate needs and personal concerns for students.  Although counselors will respond to any student need, the following topics have been identified as having high priority:

    • Academic Success including tardies, absences, misbehavior, being new to school, and school avoidance, and study skills
    • Suicide 
    • Child Abuse and Neglect
    • School Transitions
    • Severe Stress
    • Substance Abuse
    • School-Age Pregnancy
    • Harassment Issues
    • Dealing with Death and Grief
    • Family Divorce


    Individual Planning assists students in monitoring and understanding their own educational, career, and personal-social development.


    Educational areas addressed include:

    • Study Skills
    • Awareness of Educational Opportunities
    • Emphasis on Graduation Options for College Preparation
    • Appropriate Course Selection
    • Lifelong Learning
    • Understanding Test Scores


    Career areas addressed include:

    • Knowledge of Potential Career Opportunities
    • Knowledge of Career and Technical Opportunities in the District
    • Knowledge of Positive Work Habits


    Personal and social areas include:

    • Healthy Self Concepts
    • Development of Adaptive and Adjustive Social Development


    System Support includes program and staff support activities and services including:

    • Parent Education
    • Teacher and Administrator Consultation
    • Staff Development of Educators
    • Assisting with the School Improvement Plan
    • Counselor Professional Development
    • Research and Publishing
    • Community Outreach
    • Public Relations
