The word "health" is defined by the world health organization as a "state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." A recent look at the school "health" program in Texas has placed the emphasis on four major areas: prevention, intervention, promotion, and health teaching.
Prevention serves to validate the very nature of health services. Therefore, school nurses serve as catalysts for promoting health through formal-informal health education, advocates for students and families to access needed community services and to ensure child safety, and supportive partners with families to provide professional care and monitoring of student health. In addition, professional nurses provide health assessment and referral services coupled with skilled intervention to promote optimum health.
